Sherlock - The Lazy Song

Sherlock Holmes

221B Baker Street. The most well known address in all of London and the home of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s famous characters (Consulting) Detective Sherlock Holmes and Doctor John Watson.

Another thing I’ve found myself fascinated with.

(Photo note: John Watson’s summary of Sherlock Holmes.)

I went to Melbourne before Christmas last year and at one point the Flinders St station got all decked out in this “Sherlock Holmes: Game of Shadows” propaganda. Overnight, pictures of Robert Downey Jr., Jude Law, Noomi Rapace and Jared Harris appeared, promoting the (then) upcoming movie.

I absolutely loved the first one so I got really excited to see the posters up quite literally everywhere you looked in the station. It was interesting to see Sherlock as more of a bad ass fighter in these instalments than in previous interpretations of the Consulting Detective’s adventures.

I have to admit. I got really, really, really excited to see Sherlock Holmes posters at the station. Almost screamed when I did. Yep. Creepy fan girl right here ladies and gentlemen. X)

“Game of Shadows” sees Sherlock finally coming face to face with his nemesis, James Moriarty, a man who is as cunning as himself. With Doctor Watson, they find themselves involved in Moriarty’s game which takes them all around the world trying to solve the mystery before it’s too late. We see the return of many characters from the previous film as well as the addition of some important new ones who twist and turn the plot. It’s coming out on DVD soon so I’ll be happily watching it again.

(Photo note: LET’S PLAY SPOT THE PROPAGANDA! :D )

Who’s seen the recent BBC series “Sherlock” with Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman? It’s a modern day adaption of Sherlock’s adventures with two finished series. The second season finished a couple of months ago where I live but I figured out a few things before then thanks to spoilers here on Tumblr. :P

The series is really good, even with the time period change in the storyline, compared to the original stories which were set in Victorian England. The creators Stephen Moffat and Mark Gatiss have done all they can to ensure that the characters stay as close as they can to the Conan Doyle originals while twisting them so they fit in the story just right. Sherlock, for example, while retaining his smoking habit, does not use a pipe, but instead reverts to nicotine patches (sometimes up to three at a time) to help stimulate his brain. Also equipped with a laptop and mobile phone, he is technologically savvy and uses this to help him in cases. Some things stay the same, and we see Sherlock don the beloved deerstalker, a common Sherlock Holmes icon, in the series, a nod to earlier adaptions.

Holmes’ loyal companion Dr. John Watson is ever present, with the pilot episode revealing his experiences as a war doctor in Afghanistan before getting injured and returning home to London. We see the two get introduced to each other by a mutual friend who knows that they are both searching for a flatmate, and thus their adventures begin!

They’ve made it through two seasons, both made up of three 90 minute episodes with huge cliff hangers at the end of each and a third to be made soon (hopefully). The suspense is unnerving.

I went on to the BBC’s official website and they’ve made a kind of interactive online experience to accompany the series. You can check out John Watson’s online “blog” that is mentioned throughout the series, as well as Sherlock’s website, “The Science of Deduction” and help him figure out puzzles sent to him from an anonymous stalker. Molly Hooper’s blog also features, as well as the website of “Connie Prince” a character in the series who is a television personality and has met her untimely demise. Just a note that on this website lies one of the answers to Sherlock’s “The Science of Deduction” puzzles, for those who have given up on trying to work it out. All of these websites include comments left by the characters throughout the series to make it seem all the more realistic.

It’s little things like these that help Sherlockians (as they’re called) get over their Reichenbach angst (gesturing towards the final episode in season two).

That and some awesome fan made videos that I’ve stumble across on YouTube. :) There are a heap of “Sherlock Crack” videos that incorporate scenes from the series being dubbed over by sound clips from songs, TV shows, movies etc. and some are really well done.

Speaking of which, I got absolutely BORED(!) the other day, but I managed to resist the urge to spray paint a yellow smiley face on my wall and take out any and all frustrations I had on it; and instead made my own first ever fan vid and uploaded that to YouTube. :3

It’s just clips of Sherlock I put together to Bruno Mars’ “The Lazy Song” (kind of highlighting how I felt at that time :P).

Yeah. Obsessed? Quite possibly. :/

But, I love it. <3

And just as a side note while speaking of love, I understand the feelings of all you Johnlock shippers out there, I really do, but I just can’t follow that trend. I’m sorry. Now before you lynch me just know that there have been times when I do admit they look like a couple and would be absolutely adorable together. But on the whole, it’s just not happening. :S

(Photo note: Okay, I had to include this one. Benedict and Martin are just too cute/creepy. :3 And the smiley face is loving it. ;) )

Now quickly changing the subject, I am a supporter of “I believe in Sherlock Holmes. Moriarty is real.”  Also goes by the names of “John Watson’s army” in some cases. It’s made up of people who believe that Sherlock Holmes was telling the truth in the series and that Moriarty actually did exist and wasn’t Sherlock’s creation.

(Photo note: I love how John’s wearing Sherlock’s scarf here. :) )

If you’re confused, go watch the series for yourself.

Oh and a few quick notes before I wrap this up. I also support the Undershaw Preservation Trust which is aiming to stop the demolition of Undershaw, the place where Sir Arthur Conan Doyle wrote

his stories. It’s fate gets decided on May 23rd I believe.

“Commissioned and owned by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, and the site where he wrote many of his most famous works including The Hound of the Baskervilles and The Return of Sherlock Holmes, Undershaw is a building deserving preservation for the British nation, and indeed the world, for all time. Sadly, the building is currently subject to threatened redevelopment into a series of homes.”

-          Sherlockology.com

The Sherlockology website is amazing! I got a copy of “The Blind Banker” script, ringtones and solved calendar anagrams every month on there. The May one came out today. So far the longest, but for me it was one of the easiest to solve for some odd reason. :/ Ah well, I’ve got my new May wall calendar now. :D

And just linking the Undershaw Preservation Trust and the Sherlockology website, they’re holding a competition which closes at midnight tonight (I know late notice, but better late than never, right?) and it’s encouraging people to write their own Sherlock Holmes short story, poem or whatever and they’re going to pick 20 and publish them into a book to support the UPT! How cool is that?!

So guess what I did today. :3

It’s just a short story about Sherlock and John as kids. ;) Considering posting it on Tumblr.

Anywho, I’m just going to stop because this is getting bloody huge and I will keep on rambling.

Going to go watch more Sherlock videos now. :D

Whovians unite!

So I found the TARDIS (Time and relative dimension and space) from Doctor Who the other day. I know this sounds nuts but hear me out. It’s Monday afternoon and I’m walking to my first lecture of the week, “Personal and Professional Skills in Business,” and as I walk into the building I find the TARDIS smack bang in front of me.

Now this would be a surprise on its own for most people, but the matter of the fact is that I’ve been playing the new online game “Doctor Who: Worlds in Time” recently and that has led me onto one of my recent obsessions. Doctor Who.

It started off from seeing an ad for the game in the sidebar on Facebook and I decided to check it out. I have to admit, I’ve never been the biggest Doctor Who fan, the furthest I had gone into the franchise was watching a couple of episodes now and then, but I had managed to get the gist of the series from friends and family who loved it. So here I am, clicking away, signing up to the game and trying it out. I loved the different puzzle games involved. They had taken classic puzzle games like Tetris and Bejewelled and given them their own Doctor Who twist.

And because of this game I became fascinated and decided to go on a Google/Wikipedia Doctor Who spree to find out more about it all. It’s all very intriguing stuff. And a couple of days later I went into a certain building and ran into the TARDIS which sent my brain, full with this new information, into overdrive.

All of this from clicking on an ad for the game that appeared on Facebook.

But more about the game. It’s an online puzzle game in a sense where the players can participate in missions and interventions to help the Doctor save the universe from total destruction.

“Hello! Welcome to my TARDIS. I’m the Doctor.
“And you — magnificent, glorious you —
“You are going to help me save the universe.”

Aww shucks Doctor, that’s enough to make a girl blush. :3

 ;) haha :P

You start off in the TARDIS in a totally awesome set of pyjamas (-_-) and then you’re told you have to save the world. I reckon the best way to explain the incidents unfolding is how The Doctor himself explains it to you.

“Bit of a problem with Time you see: it’s shattering.
“I haven’t figured out why, yet. But somehow the timestream is splintering into frozen bits, which are tearing rifts through — well, everything.
“So! Time fracturing into a gazillion shards, and you’ll be wondering why I’ve scooped you up?
“A gazillion is rather a lot of shards. I need your help to gather some for me.”

“When in Rome, do as the Romans do. When in London, pillage and burn things.” You have to love these quotes. :)

In the end you run around, going backwards and forwards in time finding and collecting the time shards, which in turn give you gifts when opened. Gifts such as furniture for your room, clothes to replace your pyjamas (if you want ) and other little goodies.

“Find me a time shard! Looks like a glowing blue-black chunk of Wrongness. Perfectly safe and not the least bit terrifying.”

Reassuring isn’t he.

But the game is a lot of fun. You can team up with friends (that is if you have any who also play the game and are online at the same time) or make new ones and go on adventures.

The game is still in BETA testing mode so parts of it do change now and then, and they encourage players to rate missions and report any bugs or problems they encounter.

Either way, the game’s perfect who puzzle lovers and Doctor Who fans alike.

I’ve had some fun joining up in teams with a few random people which was so much fun as we made jokes in the middle of interventions that no-one seemed to get. :P

So if you decide to drop in, try the game and happen to find me wandering about don’t be afraid to say hi, add me as a friend and invite me to join a team to go on a mission. My character’s name is “Lanstar” and I’d be happy to join you.

Like my Time Lord robe? ;) You get it after completing five interventions. So what are you waiting for? Get cracking! The universe already is…

:P

I’m ba-a-ack

Righto. It’s been a while. A long while. And I have been busy. Which meant an unfortunate Tumblr drought.

But hey. Life’s like that.

Anyway I’m back on Tumblr. Can’t say for how long but I’ll give it my best shot. And for now I’ve got plenty to write about.

I’ve been meaning to write posts on a few topics recently and I’m going to post a bunch that I’ll be whipping up. So be ready for that.

According to Tumblr I haven’t posted anything in 7 months. That means nothing from August. Which means I’ve got some serious catching up to do.

Better get cracking.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part Two

WARNING: THIS POST CONTAINS SPOILERS FOR THOSE WHO LIVE IN PLACES WHERE HARRY POTTER AND THE DEATHLY HALLOWS PART TWO HAVE NOT YET BEEN RELEASED, OR HAVEN’T BOTHERED TO SEE IT ON THE DAY OF ITS RELEASE.

Yesterday I saw “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part Two.” Because I live in Australia, I got to watch it on the 13/07 rather than having to wait two agonising more days for it to come out on the 15/07. As a big Harry Potter fan, I have been anticipating this for a while now, and I’ll just say that it definitely managed to live up to my expectations. :)

I’ve got a bunch of good memories relating to Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. Back when I was in year 8 in 2007, and together with a bunch of friends we were eagerly anticipating the famed book release, counting down the days until we held a seemingly precious copy in our own careful hands. Somehow I managed not to get a copy of the book until two days (TWO DAYS!!!) after it had been released, so while everyone else was around halfway, I was at the start, trying not to listen in to spoilers from others. :/ The movie version of Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix came out and we were so hyped up that we decided that when the movie for number seven came out, we would have a party and watch all the six previous ones then go to the cinema and watch number seven.

So five years later, the movie has come out today, and there was no Potter party. :( A few of my friends were lucky enough to go to the 12:01 screening this morning while I was in bed, knowing that they were in the cinema watching something amazing. But not to fear, I got to go to a session straight after school and was in a rush to get there, but as I had to wait for my siblings to be picked up before I would be, we arrived late. L So I missed the start, but not too much apparently which is good, but it means that I still really want to go see it again to watch what I missed. :S But all in all it is a really really REALLY good movie, and it sums up the series beautifully. :’)

SERIOUS SPOILER ALERT!!!!!!!!!! LAST CHANCE TO TURN AWAY BEFORE I RUIN IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!

 …

There were loads of amazing parts in the movie that I just HAVE to talk about.

 :D

Firstly, how mature all of the characters have become since Philosopher’s Stone. You get to see a whole other side to McGonagall when she stands up to Snape, takes over as a leader, and you even see her really excited when she’s preparing Hogwarts for the upcoming battle, casts a spell on the knights in armour statues and says to Molly Weasley “I’ve always wanted to do that spell!”

Little Neville Longbottom has grown up immensely and he delivers his heartfelt speech in front of both armies after Harry “dies,” manages to taunt a pack of snatchers with “you and what army?” and uses the sword of Gryffindor to kill Nagini.

RON AND HERMIONE KISS IN THE CHAMBER OF SECRETS! :D After destroying a horcrux (Helga Hufflepuff’s cup) with a basilisk fang, they just BAM go into the kiss. :)

THE PART WHEN VOLDEMORT HUGS DRACO! :S This was so awkward and weird. He’s like the crazy uncle that no one likes but they all put up with anyway.

Snape’s memories. This was well done. His emotions for Lilly seem so pure. Except James wasn’t as I imagined. :/ The little kid has light brown hair and doesn’t have glasses.

When Harry discovers the resurrection stone! Okay, so this is where I broke. :S Tears started welling up when Sirius tells Harry that they will always be with him “In here” *indicating to Harry’s heart.* :’) awwww. <3

They left out Bellatrix’s lines, (“What will happen your children when I’ve killed you?” taunted Bellatrix, as mad as her master, capering as Molly’s curses danced around her. “When Mummy’s gone the same way as Freddie?”) right after Molly Weasley’s famous “NOT MY DAUGHTER YOU BITCH!” which thankfully, they included.

One thing that I thought could’ve been better was “19 years later.” They left a lot out of that chapter, and I ended up having to explain to my family (who haven’t read ANY of the books) what happened. And they skipped Ron’s line when everyone’s staring at Harry! “Don’t let it worry you…It’s me. I’m extremely famous.” That part of the movie kinda brought me down. :(

Ok, I’m going to stop before something weird and unexplainable happens to me right now.

 …

Here’s a Potter smiley for you all.
